Oh how I was looking forward to this day. Roadtrip to Side with my favorite people. Side is such a beautiful town only a 1 hour drive away from Alanya. Perfect getaway for a day.
A mythological story told by Hecataios of Miletus claims that “Side” was the daughter of mountain and bull god Tauros.
Side entered Persian rule in 540s B.C. In 334 B.C it surrendered to Alexander the Great and Macedonian rule. The city finally got some freedom and became rich by opening up the harbor to piracy before it came under Roman rule in 67 B.C Under Roman rule the city became richer and the capital of the region.
From the 7th century A.D the city lost influence due to the Arabic raids of the Mediterranean. And during the takeover by the Seljuks turks in 13th century the city became abandoned.
At the end of the 19th century, because of the revolts against the Ottoman rule in Crete Island and the annexation of the island of Greece, Turkish population fled from the island. Some of the refugees were settled in Side by the government calling it Selimiye after the Sultans son. The settlement later claimed the name Side when it became a municipality.
We had such a nice day just walking around in antic Side. Mini was loving the ruins and had fun climbing on them. Not much tourists there so we got to see many of the things alone. A pit stop here and some shopping there for the visitors from Norway and I think they started to love Side as much as I do. Maria said a few times more than necessary how cute those shopping streets were. She bought the nicest pairs of shalvar that I would love to have myself. Have to see if I can get my brother in law to make something like that for me.
After Side we drove to Aspendos but sadly it was closed due to fixing ups so we will just have to do that one in october when they are coming back.
